What Is Baldi’s Basics?
Baldi’s Basics in Education and Learning is a free first-person indie horror game created by Micah McGonigal (known online as mystman12) under his studio Basically Games. It was developed in one week for the 2018 Meta Game Jam as a parody of the low-budget 90s educational games that ran on classroom computers.
The premise is simple: navigate a school, collect seven notebooks, and escape. The reality is that this is a survival game disguised as an education game. Every notebook you collect contains three math problems. The first two are normal. The third one is intentionally impossible to solve — there is no right answer — and getting it wrong makes your teacher, Baldi, permanently faster. By the seventh notebook, Baldi is running.
The game went viral in 2018, spawned hundreds of fan games, and turned one solo developer’s game jam entry into a full indie franchise. Plays in browser free. Also available as a full paid game (Baldi’s Basics Plus) with expanded content.

The Math Problem Mechanic — And Why You Will Always Fail It
Each of the seven notebooks contains three math problems. You interact with the notebook and type your answers. The first problem is straightforward. The second is a bit harder. The third is a string of random symbols and impossible numbers — there is no correct answer.
This is not a bug. It is the game’s central design decision. The educational format is a setup. Every player eventually types something wrong on that third problem, which triggers Baldi’s ruler slap sound and causes him to speed up. The more notebooks you collect, the more wrong answers accumulate, and the faster Baldi moves. By the time you are hunting for your sixth or seventh notebook, he is moving fast enough that reaching the exit requires serious route planning.
Every third question in every notebook is unsolvable by design. Do not spend time trying to figure it out. Type anything, take the speed penalty, and focus on what comes next. Players who stall on the third problem trying to find a correct answer are giving Baldi more time to close in while standing still.

The Characters You Will Meet
Baldi is not the only threat in the school. Several other characters patrol the hallways and each one creates a different kind of problem.
Items and What They Do
Items are scattered around the school and found in classrooms and vending machines. Managing what you hold and when to use each item is the game’s strategic layer.
- BSODA — Throws a drink that pushes characters away on contact. The most universally useful item. Use it when Baldi is directly behind you and you need a few seconds of distance.
- Scissors — Instantly cuts Playtime’s jump rope and lets you escape immediately. Save these specifically for Playtime encounters — nothing else frees you from her.
- Alarm Clock — Goes off after a delay and attracts every character in the school to its location. Place it strategically to pull Baldi away from your current route before you make a move.
- Energy Flavored Zesty Bar — Recovers your stamina so you can run again. Running is essential for escaping Baldi in late-game situations but it depletes quickly and also risks Principal detection.
- Principal’s Keys — Open locked faculty doors, allowing access to restricted shortcuts through the school.
Surviving — Route and Timing
The school layout is randomised each run, so you cannot memorise a fixed route. What you can do is develop a general strategy that works regardless of layout.
Collect the first few notebooks while Baldi is still slow. These early notebooks are almost free. Save your most powerful items — especially BSODA and the Alarm Clock — for the later notebooks when Baldi is fast. A BSODA used on notebook 2 when Baldi is barely moving is a wasted resource. The same BSODA used at notebook 6 when Baldi is sprinting can be the difference between escaping and getting caught.
Listen to Baldi’s ruler sound. The slapping gets louder as he gets closer. Using the audio to judge his distance is more reliable than trying to visually spot him around corners — by the time you see him, it is often too late to change direction.
Why It Went Viral in 2018
Baldi’s Basics launched in April 2018 for a game jam and was picked up by major YouTube gaming creators including Markiplier and Jacksepticeye within weeks. The combination of deliberately terrible 90s educational game aesthetics, the horror genre subversion, and the unsolvable math problem mechanic — a joke that immediately becomes genuinely scary — produced a reaction dynamic that was perfect for video content.
The game was made by one person in a week. That context made it even more impressive. Micah McGonigal followed it with a full Kickstarter-funded expansion (Baldi’s Basics Plus) and a growing franchise of official and fan-made content. The Classic version remains available free online and is still the version most first-time players encounter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Baldi’s Basics is one of the most creative game jam games ever made. The idea of hiding a survival horror game inside a parody of terrible 90s educational software — and using an unsolvable math problem as the trigger that breaks the illusion — is genuinely brilliant design.
