What Is Baldi’s Basics?

Baldi’s Basics in Education and Learning is a free first-person indie horror game created by Micah McGonigal (known online as mystman12) under his studio Basically Games. It was developed in one week for the 2018 Meta Game Jam as a parody of the low-budget 90s educational games that ran on classroom computers.

The premise is simple: navigate a school, collect seven notebooks, and escape. The reality is that this is a survival game disguised as an education game. Every notebook you collect contains three math problems. The first two are normal. The third one is intentionally impossible to solve — there is no right answer — and getting it wrong makes your teacher, Baldi, permanently faster. By the seventh notebook, Baldi is running.

The game went viral in 2018, spawned hundreds of fan games, and turned one solo developer’s game jam entry into a full indie franchise. Plays in browser free. Also available as a full paid game (Baldi’s Basics Plus) with expanded content.

The Math Problem Mechanic — And Why You Will Always Fail It

Each of the seven notebooks contains three math problems. You interact with the notebook and type your answers. The first problem is straightforward. The second is a bit harder. The third is a string of random symbols and impossible numbers — there is no correct answer.

This is not a bug. It is the game’s central design decision. The educational format is a setup. Every player eventually types something wrong on that third problem, which triggers Baldi’s ruler slap sound and causes him to speed up. The more notebooks you collect, the more wrong answers accumulate, and the faster Baldi moves. By the time you are hunting for your sixth or seventh notebook, he is moving fast enough that reaching the exit requires serious route planning.

You cannot get the third problem right

Every third question in every notebook is unsolvable by design. Do not spend time trying to figure it out. Type anything, take the speed penalty, and focus on what comes next. Players who stall on the third problem trying to find a correct answer are giving Baldi more time to close in while standing still.

The Characters You Will Meet

Baldi is not the only threat in the school. Several other characters patrol the hallways and each one creates a different kind of problem.

👨‍🏫
Baldi
The teacher and main antagonist. Baldi starts moving at a walking pace and can be heard by the sound of his ruler. Each wrong math answer permanently increases his speed. He moves through walls and always knows approximately where you are — so there is no point in hiding in a room. The only options are to stay ahead of him or use items to create distance.
🧑‍💼
Principal of the Thing
Patrols the school enforcing the rules. If he catches you running in the halls, opening a faculty-only door, or breaking other school regulations, he sends you to detention — a locked room you cannot leave for a set time period. Detention is extremely dangerous when Baldi is nearby because you cannot move while he closes in. Never run unless you have checked the hallway for the Principal first.
😤
It’s a Bully
Stands in hallways and blocks your path, demanding you give him an item before he lets you through. The Bully is a resource drain — you can pay him with a less important item or find a different route around him. Giving him a critical item like BSODA or Scissors at the wrong moment can significantly complicate the rest of your run.
🎀
Playtime
Approaches and forces you to jump rope with her. You must complete a set number of jumps (clicking in rhythm) before you can leave. This is purely a time sink — it keeps you stationary while Baldi moves. The Scissors item is the only way to immediately escape from Playtime’s jump rope. Save them specifically for her.
🤖
1st Prize
A robot that chases and pushes you. Being shoved by 1st Prize can send you directly into Baldi, the Principal, or a dead end. The BSODA drink can be used to push 1st Prize (and other characters) away and buy some distance.
🧹
Gotta Sweep
A sentient broom that periodically sweeps through hallways at speed, pushing every character in its path — including you and Baldi. Gotta Sweep can accidentally push you to safety or directly into Baldi. It is unpredictable but can sometimes be exploited as an emergency escape tool.

Items and What They Do

Items are scattered around the school and found in classrooms and vending machines. Managing what you hold and when to use each item is the game’s strategic layer.

  • 🥤BSODA — Throws a drink that pushes characters away on contact. The most universally useful item. Use it when Baldi is directly behind you and you need a few seconds of distance.
  • ✂️Scissors — Instantly cuts Playtime’s jump rope and lets you escape immediately. Save these specifically for Playtime encounters — nothing else frees you from her.
  • Alarm Clock — Goes off after a delay and attracts every character in the school to its location. Place it strategically to pull Baldi away from your current route before you make a move.
  • 🍫Energy Flavored Zesty Bar — Recovers your stamina so you can run again. Running is essential for escaping Baldi in late-game situations but it depletes quickly and also risks Principal detection.
  • 🔑Principal’s Keys — Open locked faculty doors, allowing access to restricted shortcuts through the school.

Surviving — Route and Timing

The school layout is randomised each run, so you cannot memorise a fixed route. What you can do is develop a general strategy that works regardless of layout.

Collect the first few notebooks while Baldi is still slow. These early notebooks are almost free. Save your most powerful items — especially BSODA and the Alarm Clock — for the later notebooks when Baldi is fast. A BSODA used on notebook 2 when Baldi is barely moving is a wasted resource. The same BSODA used at notebook 6 when Baldi is sprinting can be the difference between escaping and getting caught.

Listen to Baldi’s ruler sound. The slapping gets louder as he gets closer. Using the audio to judge his distance is more reliable than trying to visually spot him around corners — by the time you see him, it is often too late to change direction.

Why It Went Viral in 2018

Baldi’s Basics launched in April 2018 for a game jam and was picked up by major YouTube gaming creators including Markiplier and Jacksepticeye within weeks. The combination of deliberately terrible 90s educational game aesthetics, the horror genre subversion, and the unsolvable math problem mechanic — a joke that immediately becomes genuinely scary — produced a reaction dynamic that was perfect for video content.

The game was made by one person in a week. That context made it even more impressive. Micah McGonigal followed it with a full Kickstarter-funded expansion (Baldi’s Basics Plus) and a growing franchise of official and fan-made content. The Classic version remains available free online and is still the version most first-time players encounter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who made Baldi’s Basics?
Baldi’s Basics was created by Micah McGonigal (online handle: mystman12) under his studio Basically Games. He developed it alone in approximately one week for the 2018 Meta Game Jam, where it placed second. The official site is basicallygames.com.
Why is the third math problem always wrong?
Because it is designed to be impossible. Every third question in every notebook is intentionally unsolvable — there is no correct answer. This is the game’s central mechanic: the educational facade exists specifically to set you up to fail, trigger Baldi’s rage, and turn a fake classroom game into a survival horror experience. Type anything and move on.
What are the controls?
WASD to move. Mouse to look around. Left Click to interact with notebooks, doors and items. Scroll Wheel to select items. Right Click to use the selected item.
What does Baldi sound like when he is close?
Baldi makes a ruler slapping sound as he moves. The sound gets louder and more frequent as he gets closer. Listening for it is the most reliable way to judge how much time you have before he reaches your position — more useful than trying to see him around corners.
What does the Principal of the Thing do?
The Principal enforces school rules. If he catches you running in the hallways, entering faculty-only areas, or breaking other regulations, he locks you in a detention room for a set period. Being caught in detention while Baldi is nearby is one of the most dangerous situations in the game because you cannot move while he approaches.
What is the best item to save for late game?
BSODA and the Alarm Clock. BSODA pushes Baldi away when he is directly behind you — most valuable when he is fast, not when he is slow. The Alarm Clock draws all characters to a set location, giving you a clear path. Both items are wasted early when Baldi is barely moving and essential late when he is at full speed.
What is the difference between Baldi’s Basics Classic and Baldi’s Basics Plus?
Baldi’s Basics Classic is the original 2018 free game with one school, seven notebooks, and the base character roster. It is the version available in browser. Baldi’s Basics Plus is the expanded paid version on Steam with procedurally generated floors, new characters, new items, additional game modes, and significantly more content developed through a Kickstarter campaign.
Is Baldi’s Basics scary?
It depends on what you find frightening. The game uses jump scares, tense audio (Baldi’s ruler getting louder as he closes in), and the horror of being chased in a confined space with no weapon. The deliberately bad graphics lean into discomfort rather than photorealism. Most players find it more stressful and funny than genuinely terrifying — but the “educational game that turns into a nightmare” format produces a genuine startle reaction the first time Baldi starts running.
✦ Final Verdict

Baldi’s Basics is one of the most creative game jam games ever made. The idea of hiding a survival horror game inside a parody of terrible 90s educational software — and using an unsolvable math problem as the trigger that breaks the illusion — is genuinely brilliant design.
