What Is Foodle?
Foodle is a free food-themed word puzzle game developed by Daniel Anyanwoke, inspired by the Wordle formula. Guess a hidden five-letter food-related word in six attempts. After each guess the tiles change colour to tell you which letters are correct, which are in the wrong position, and which do not appear at all.
The food constraint is the entire point. Every word in Foodle’s puzzle pool relates to cooking, eating, or the kitchen — dishes, ingredients, drinks, utensils, and the occasional well-known chef. If you know your BASIL from your THYME and your TAHINI from your TAHOE, you have a meaningful advantage over a general vocabulary player.

How to Play
Type any valid five-letter food-related word using your keyboard and press Enter to submit. The tiles change colour based on how close your guess was to the hidden word.
Every guess must be a valid five-letter food-related word — random letter strings are rejected. Use the on-screen keyboard or your physical keyboard. The letter board at the bottom updates after each guess to show which letters are confirmed, displaced, or eliminated.

What Makes Foodle Different From Wordle
The mechanics are identical to Wordle. The difference is the word pool — Foodle uses only food-related vocabulary. This changes the game in two specific ways.
First, your general vocabulary advantage shrinks. Obscure five-letter words from other domains are irrelevant. What matters is culinary vocabulary — ingredients from different cuisines, dish names from around the world, cooking techniques and tools. Players with broader food knowledge consistently outperform those with a more general vocabulary.
Second, the word pool is smaller. Foodle answers have appeared: PASTA, SAUCE, OLIVE, ONION, THYME, BASIL, CURRY, GRAVY, BREAD, TAHOE, SAVOY, EATER, LLAMA (a past answer), CIDER, STEAK. The pool rewards players who think specifically about food rather than applying general word-game strategies.
Starting Word Strategy for Foodle
The best Wordle opening words — high-frequency letters like CRANE, STARE, AUDIO — are less optimal in Foodle because food vocabulary has different letter distribution patterns. Food words tend to be vowel-heavy and use specific common letters (S, A, E, I, O, R, T, N, C).
- OLIVE — covers O, L, I, V, E. Five high-frequency food vowels and consonants in one guess. One of the best Foodle openers.
- PASTA — covers P, A, S, T, A. Very common food letters, especially S and A which appear in dozens of food-related words.
- SAUCE — covers S, A, U, C, E. Three vowels and two high-frequency consonants. Strong first guess for clearing the vowel field.
- THYME — covers T, H, Y, M, E. Useful for later guesses when S and A are already confirmed or eliminated.
Follow your opening word with a guess that covers different letters entirely rather than reusing confirmed letters before you need to. Two maximally distinct guesses give you more information about the letter pool than two guesses that share letters.
The Food Categories to Know
Foodle answers come from several food-related categories. Knowing all of them prevents the mistake of only thinking about one type of food word when stuck.
Features Worth Knowing
Foodle tracks your statistics — total games played, win percentage, current streak, and longest streak. These carry across sessions if you play in the same browser without clearing cookies. The statistics make the daily puzzle feel like part of a longer ongoing challenge rather than a standalone session.
Color Blind Mode replaces the standard green/yellow/grey with high-contrast alternatives that are readable for players with colour vision impairment. It is in the Settings menu and works identically to the standard mode.
Result sharing lets you copy an emoji grid of your guesses and share it without revealing the answer — the same social format that made Wordle a phenomenon.
