Escape Road City is a top-down police chase game where you play as a bank robber trying to survive in a dense, obstacle-filled city. You collect cash from street piles, spin a slot machine to win new cars, and survive an escalating police force for as long as possible.
Developed by AzGames and released in January 2025, it’s the third entry in the Escape Road series — the city-specific version. Free to play in browser, no download, on desktop and mobile. It uses HTML5 and runs on all modern browsers.

The car moves forward on its own — forward speed is automatic. You only control direction. At low speeds, turns feel responsive. At higher speeds, the city arrives fast enough that a half-second reaction delay sends you into a wall. The top-down camera gives you a reasonable view ahead, but not much of a margin at top speed. New players should resist the urge to go full throttle until they’ve read the road a few turns ahead.
How It Plays
The moment the game starts, you’ve just robbed a bank. The police are already on their way. Your yellow pickup is your only vehicle, the streets are dense with traffic and obstacles, and the goal is simple: survive as long as possible and collect as much cash as you can.
Unlike the original Escape Road’s open suburban roads, Escape Road City puts you in tight, congested city streets crammed with parked cars, buildings, and obstacles from the first second. There is no warm-up period. The environment is more punishing right away, which is why the series regulars often find this version harder than the original despite sharing the same control scheme.
Buildings are solid and cannot be driven through. Lampposts and fences are smashable. Going off-road onto grass or unpaved areas slows your car down. Falling into water ends the run instantly. Learning which obstacles will stop you and which will crumble is one of the first skills the game teaches through trial and error.
Cash Piles, the Slot Machine, and Cars
Cash piles appear scattered around the city streets during every run. Each pile is worth $10. Collect 10 of them and you reach the $100 needed to spin the slot machine for a new vehicle. The slot machine result is completely random — you cannot target specific cars. Results come from four rarity tiers; higher-tier vehicles are faster, handle better, or have shapes that make it harder for police to ram you effectively.
The garage holds over 90 vehicles in total, ranging from common city cars to drift-tuned sports cars, trucks, and more unusual vehicles. Each one drives differently. You cannot buy specific vehicles — every unlock comes from a slot machine spin. The strategy therefore is to keep surviving long enough to keep collecting cash, which means staying alive is also the fastest path to unlocking better cars.
One confirmed bonus mechanic: arrows sometimes appear pointing away from your car while driving. These indicate the direction of nearby power-ups — shields, health boosts, and speed buffs — as well as hidden special vehicle locations on the map.
Police Escalation
The police force grows more aggressive and more numerous the longer you survive. The escalation pattern, confirmed across the series:
| Stage | What joins the chase |
|---|---|
| Early game | Standard police squad cars — easy to dodge with a quick side-street turn |
| Mid game | More aggressive officers, faster pursuit vehicles, armored units |
| High wanted level | Military units with tanks and heavy weaponry |
| Maximum (6-star) | Full military escalation — survival at this point is extremely difficult |
Police cars will actively try to ram you from the sides and force you into obstacles. One effective counter is to let a chasing police car commit to a ram attempt, then turn sharply — the pursuing car often collides with traffic or a wall instead. This works because the AI matches your direction before you turn, not after.
Tips and Strategy
▸ Collect cash piles before heading down high-risk alleys
Cash scattered on open streets is safer to grab than cash in tight alleys with low escape routes. Collect what’s available on wider roads first, then only enter narrower streets when the police presence around you is manageable. Getting boxed in during a cash run wastes the progress you’ve built.
▸ Use police cars against each other
Drive directly toward a pursuing police car, then make a sharp turn just before impact. The officer behind you often can’t react in time and hits traffic or another police car instead. This technique works best on busier stretches of road where there’s more for them to collide with. The denser the traffic, the more effectively you can use it as a buffer.
▸ Follow the on-screen arrows for power-ups
The arrows that appear pointing away from your car mid-run lead to power-ups and hidden special vehicles. These are easy to miss because most players focus on the road ahead. When you spot an arrow, glance in its direction briefly to assess if the route is safe enough to chase. A shield or health boost mid-run can meaningfully extend your survival.
▸ Don’t push top speed in the city — you need reaction time
The city layout in Escape Road City gives you far less straight-road distance than the original game before the next turn or obstacle. Going full throttle leaves almost no time to react to a pedestrian car, a parked vehicle, or a police block that appears around a corner. Keeping speed at a level where you can complete a turn with a second to spare extends runs far more reliably than constant maximum speed.
▸ Your starter car will get destroyed — steal another
The yellow pickup doesn’t last long once police start ramming. When black smoke appears from your vehicle, start looking for a nearby car to commandeer. A line extends from your character showing which vehicle you’ll enter when you bail — make sure it’s pointing at something useful before jumping. In a crowd of vehicles, this is harder than it sounds.
