Simulation games are built around modeling a system — a business, a vehicle, a city, a life — and letting you interact with it. Unlike most other categories, the “goal” in a simulation game is often less important than the system itself. Some simulations have clear objectives (reach a certain size, hit a target number), while others are closer to open-ended sandboxes where the point is simply to see what happens when you make a change.

Cause and Effect Over Reflexes

The defining skill in simulation games is understanding cause and effect within the system — what happens if you change this setting, add this element, or remove that resource. Because most simulations let you experiment freely (often without harsh penalties for “wrong” choices), the genre rewards curiosity: trying something just to see the result is rarely a wasted action, even if it doesn’t directly help you reach a goal.

Getting Started with a New Simulation

  • Don’t rush to “win.” Many simulation games don’t have a traditional win state, and even those that do are usually more enjoyable if you spend some time just observing how the system responds to basic changes before optimizing toward a goal.
  • Small changes reveal the rules. Rather than making several changes at once, adjusting one thing at a time makes it much easier to understand what that specific element actually controls.
  • Read feedback, not just numbers. Simulations often communicate through visual or audio cues in addition to numbers on screen — a sound effect, an animation, or a color change can tell you something is working (or not) before the numbers catch up.
