Nugget Royale

4.8 (49,588)

You’re a chicken on a tilting disk above a meat grinder, trying to push 79 other chickens off before they push you. Last one standing wins and escapes becoming a nugget.

Nugget Royale (also at nuggetroyale.io) was developed by Pelican Party Studios — a two-person team from Rotterdam: Jesper van den Ende on game mechanics and Jurgen Hoogeboom on visuals. The same studio made splix.io and Ducklings.io. It’s free to play in any browser with no download, and also available on Steam, iOS, and Android.

Controls

ActionInput
MoveWASD
SprintDouble-tap + hold a direction
JumpSpacebar
Double jumpSpacebar twice
Hover (mid-air)Hold Spacebar while airborne
Charge bumpHold Spacebar on ground, then release

Two things the controls table doesn’t make obvious: the hover consumes stamina — you can’t hold Spacebar in the air indefinitely. Use it to recover position after a hit, not as standard movement. The charge bump (hold Spacebar on ground, release) is the primary tool for pushing opponents — it’s a directional lunge with more force than a regular sprint collision. Most new players never discover it because it looks like a misfire on a jump.

The Mechanics That Actually Matter

▸ Corn and size

Corn scattered on the disk makes your chicken grow. Bigger chicken = stronger pushes, but slower movement and harder to control. Smaller chickens are faster and better jumpers but can’t bully larger opponents off the edge as easily. You start at the smallest size, which actually gives jumping advantages early. The tradeoff is real — a huge chicken that can’t dodge hazards is easier to eliminate than a small fast one.

▸ The disk always has an arrow on your chicken

With 80 chickens on screen, identifying yourself is genuinely difficult. Your chicken has an arrow above its head. This sounds trivial but in the chaotic first 30 seconds when everyone is clustered, players who lose track of themselves waste critical time and often get knocked off while confused. Keep the arrow in your peripheral vision constantly.

▸ The disk tilts toward the grinder

The platform doesn’t just shrink — it physically tilts, creating slopes that slide chickens toward the edge. Fighting uphill costs speed and makes you an easy charge target. When the platform tilts against you, the faster play is to ride the slope sideways into a jump rather than running into it.

Stage Hazards

Nugget Royale has 14+ confirmed stage variants. Each changes what you’re dealing with beyond just other chickens:

  • Spinning saws / buzzsaws — rotate across the disk in lanes. They run on a cycle — the timing is learnable.
  • Slippery ice — drastically changes movement. Arcing paths handle drift better than sharp turns.
  • Pistons and fans — also pattern-based. Pistons fire at intervals; fans push chickens in a direction. Both can be used to time repositioning.
  • Shrinking platform — the disk gets progressively smaller, forcing everyone closer.
  • Growth pills / sumo stages — power-ups appear that dramatically increase chicken size for shoving.

Hazard cycles aren’t random — saws, pistons, and fans all follow repeating patterns that experienced players learn and route around instead of reactively avoiding.

Hats and the Crown

Matches earn nuggets (the in-game currency). Nuggets are spent to unlock cosmetic hats. Confirmed hats include a visor cap, ketchup cap, deep fry basket, drinking lid, and more — over 40 total. None affect gameplay.

The golden crown is different from shop hats — it’s worn by the #1 player on the leaderboard in real time during the match. It’s not purchasable. If you see a chicken wearing a crown in your game, that player is currently ranked first. It also functions as a threat signal — crowned players tend to know the charge mechanic well.

How to Survive Longer

▸ Save hover stamina for recovery, not movement

New players hold Spacebar mid-air constantly and run out of stamina exactly when they need it to recover from a hit. Treat hover as an emergency parachute — keep it for moments when you’re knocked airborne and need to get back to the platform.

▸ Use the charge bump instead of sprinting into people

A sprint collision nudges. A charge bump (hold then release Spacebar on the ground) sends opponents flying. Near the disk edge, one clean charge ends a bigger chicken’s run — this is far more efficient than repeatedly bumping someone with sprints.

▸ Don’t eat corn if approaching it puts you near the edge

Growth is useful but getting knocked off while reaching for corn mid-chaos is extremely common. Collect corn that lies along your natural path, not corn that requires you to detour toward the disk’s outer ring.

▸ On ice stages, stop steering and let momentum carry you

Fighting drift on slippery ice wastes stamina and makes your movement predictable. Broad, arcing paths that work with the slide keep you in control and harder to charge because your movement is less linear.

▸ Watch platform tilt early, not when you’re already sliding

The platform telegraphs its tilt before it becomes dangerous. Players who read the tilt contour early reposition toward the high side with time to spare. Players who react only when sliding are already in recovery mode and easy targets for a charge.

FAQ

Who made Nugget Royale?
Pelican Party Studios — Jesper van den Ende (mechanics) and Jurgen Hoogeboom (visuals), based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. They also made splix.io and Ducklings.io.
How many players are in each match?
80 players per match, all real people online at the same time. Your chicken has an arrow above its head so you can identify it in the chaos.
What does eating corn do?
It makes your chicken grow larger. Bigger = stronger pushes but slower movement. Smaller chickens are faster and jump better but can’t bully others off the edge as easily.
What is the charge bump mechanic?
Hold Spacebar on the ground, then release — this triggers a directional charge lunge. It’s the game’s primary shoving tool and far more powerful than a sprint collision.
How do you unlock hats?
Earn nuggets by playing matches (more for surviving longer), then spend them in the cosmetics shop. Over 40 hats are available including the ketchup cap, visor, and deep fry basket.
What is the crown and how do you get it?
The crown is worn by the #1 ranked player on the leaderboard during a match — it’s not purchasable. It updates in real time as the leaderboard shifts.
Is Nugget Royale available on mobile?
Yes — iOS App Store, Android, and mobile browsers all work. It’s also on Steam for Windows and Linux.
