How to Play Basketball Stars
Your main goal is to finish the match with more points than the opposing side. Move toward the basket for close-range shots and dunks, create space for longer attempts, and use the same action button to steal when the opponent has possession.
Defense matters just as much as scoring. Stay close enough to challenge a shot, use block at the right moment instead of holding it constantly, and watch for opportunities to steal after your opponent commits to an attack. Double-tapping a horizontal direction performs a quick dash, which is useful for escaping pressure, closing defensive space or reaching a loose ball.
Regular matches last 60 seconds. If the score is tied when time expires, the game can move into a 15-second overtime. If the score remains tied, another overtime can follow until the match is decided.

Game Modes
Quick Match
Quick Match sends you directly into a 1v1 game using randomly selected opposing teams and players. It is the fastest option when you simply want to start playing without configuring a tournament.
Random Match
Random Match gives you more control over the setup. You can play a traditional 1v1 against the computer or use a 2v2 format where you control one player while AI teammates and opponents handle the remaining positions.
Tournament
Tournament mode is the main progression challenge. The supplied game contains a 16-team bracket beginning with the Round of 16 and continuing through the quarterfinal, semifinal and final. A third-place game is also supported when applicable.
You can choose Normal or Hard difficulty. The AI profiles become more demanding as you progress through the bracket, while Hard difficulty starts from the stronger set of opponent profiles. This makes later tournament rounds noticeably less forgiving than an ordinary quick match.
Training
Training puts you on the court without an opposing player and does not use the standard match-ending timer. It is useful for learning movement, shot distance, dunks, dashes and the timing of the game’s different actions.
Local 2 Player
On desktop, Basketball Stars supports more than a simple head-to-head match. Two players can compete in 1v1, play 2v2 with an AI teammate on each side, or join the same team in co-op 2v2 against two computer-controlled players. It is local multiplayer on one keyboard rather than real-time online matchmaking.
Shooting, Dunking and Special Abilities
Basketball Stars uses both 2-point and 3-point scoring. Moving closer to the hoop creates opportunities for regular dunks, while sufficiently distant successful shots can count for three. Your movement also matters: the game’s shot calculation takes factors such as distance, release position and player motion into account, so shooting while well positioned is generally safer than throwing up a rushed attempt while moving quickly.
A special meter gradually becomes available during play. Once ready, your selected player can use one of the game’s powerful character abilities:
- Mega Dunk: launches the ball carrier into a special finishing sequence for an automatic super dunk.
- Defence: temporarily creates a protective shield around your basket that can knock away an incoming ball.
- Alley-Oop: sends the ball through a special arc before the player completes a spectacular automatic dunk.
- Fast Break: triggers a rapid super dash across the court that can quickly change possession or attacking position.
These moves are tied to the player/team selections rather than an upgrade tree. Knowing whether your selection offers an attacking or defensive special can change how you approach the final seconds of a close game.
Players, Teams and Achievements
The build contains 34 player-head identities across 17 selectable emblems, including recognizable basketball-star names stored in the game assets such as LeBron, Durant, Curry, Harden, Antetokounmpo, Doncic, Jordan and Shaquille. The game uses exaggerated cartoon-style versions rather than a realistic basketball simulation.
There are no coins to grind, equipment upgrades to purchase or character-stat shop in this version. Instead, longer-term goals come from tournament results, recorded statistics and achievements. Challenges include making three-pointers, completing dunks, stealing the ball, blocking shots, scoring buzzer beaters, reaching point totals and winning tournament cups, including harder objectives on the Hard difficulty setting.
Tips for Winning Basketball Stars Matches
- Use the pump fake. When you have the ball, a well-timed fake can bait a defender into reacting before you shoot or drive.
- Do not spam steals. Wait until you are close enough to the ball handler before committing to the action.
- Learn the dash. Double-tapping left or right is one of the most useful moves for creating separation or recovering on defense.
- Mix dunks and jump shots. Constantly attacking the rim makes your offense easier to predict.
- Respect the clock. With only one minute in regulation, giving away an easy basket can be more damaging than missing a difficult shot.
- Use your special at the right moment. An attacking super can create reliable points, while the Defence ability can be more valuable when protecting a narrow lead.
- Practise in Training. It is the easiest way to learn movement and shot positioning without worrying about an opponent or the normal timer.
- Expect stronger tournament AI. Later rounds and Hard difficulty use tougher AI behavior, so tactics that dominate an early opponent may not work as consistently near the final.
